Saliem S. Mitchell Obituary (1922 - 2008)

Waterville Saliem ''Sammy'' Mitchell died unexpectedly at his home in Waterville Thurs., May 29, 2008. He was born in Waterville Apr. 6, 1922, son of Elias and Mary Nagem Mitchell. He was educated in Waterville schools, graduating from Waterville Senior High School in 1941. He was employed by Central Maine Motors for several years before returning to school at the age of 38. He earned a bachelor's degree in history from the University of Maine and taught at Cony High School until his retirement in 1984. He was a veteran of WW II, serving with the U.S. Army 317th Ordinance MM Co. in the European Theatre and was the recipient of five bronze stars. He was a member of St. Joseph Maronite Catholic Church, The Lebanon Youth Society, the American Legion, and the Lodge of Elks in Waterville. He served on the Waterville City Council in the 1950's. He enjoyed sports, world history, following the stock market, and was a Mr. fix-it for his family and friends. Upon his retirement, he joined the Prime Time Bowling League and looked forward to the Monday morning sessions, especially the camaraderie with his bowling teammates. He rarely missed his weekday breakfasts with family and special friends. He is survived by his devoted wife of 61 years, Anna Thomas Mitchell of Waterville; his loving daughter, Cynthia Joy of Winslow; brothers, Michael of Old Orchard Beach and Philip of Detroit, MI; sister, Barbara Murphy of Hampton, VA; and many nieces and nephews whose visits and company he cherished. He was predeceased by his parents; his brothers, Thomas and James; sisters, Sally Meyers, Margaret Byrd and Victoria Hansen. Visiting hours will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Tues., June 3, 2008 with a Wake Service at 6 p.m. at the Gallant Funeral Home, 10 Elm St., Waterville. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wed., June 4, 2008 at St. Joseph Maronite Catholic Church, Front St., Waterville with Rev. Larry Jensen officiating and Rev. Mr. Peter Joseph assisting. Those who wish may make donations in his memory to St. Joseph Maronite Catholic Church Building Fund, 3 Appleton St., Waterville, ME 04901.
