Maxine Phyllis Winters Obituary (1923 - 2010)

Marietta, GA and Waterville Maxine Phyllis Shirley Winters, 87, a long-time resident of the Waterville-Winslow area, died Tuesday, Nov. 30, at Signature Healthcare at Marietta where she had been residing for the past 11 months. Maxine was born March 20, 1923 in Enfield, a daughter of Thomas and Rhoda Mae Ewing Shirley. She graduated from Bucksport High School in 1941 and attended Eastern Maine School of Commerce. On July 25, 1942, she married Gordon H. Winters of Waterville in a civil ceremony in Alexandria, VA., one day before he was sent overseas to serve with the U.S. Army during World War II. Maxine was a homemaker most of her life, transporting her four children to and from numerous hockey games and gymnastics events, and supported her husband while he operated the family business, H.T. Winters Co. Maxine was a member of the Waterville Country Club, active in the Waterville Hockey Boosters, was involved in several womens bridge clubs in the Waterville area, The Friends Vacation Club and Voter Registration with the City of Waterville. An avid golfer who never missed a chance to play, Maxine was an active member of the T.O.S.C.A. Committee, Watervilles Womens Club, State Pay Womens Golf Board and VAT 69 Club. She was predeceased by her husband, Gordon, on Oct. 15, 1983. Maxine is survived by her four children, daughter, Joan Winters and her husband, Steve Lovejoy, of Gansevoort, N.Y., son, Arthur Rusty Winters and his wife, Margaret Margi Beck Winters of San Antonio, Texas, son, Mark Winters, of Oakland, and daughter, Patty Fitzpatrick, and her husband, Paul, of Marietta, Ga.; 10 grandchildren, Paul Glasier, Leslie Glasier Buteau, David Winters, Anne Winters, Todd Winters, Tim Winters, Lisa Winters, Kate Fitzpatrick McKinney, Paul-Michael Fitzpatrick and Elizabeth Fitzpatrick; six great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 6, at the Pleasant Street United Methodist Church in Waterville, officiated by the Rev. Arlene Tully, where a one-hour social gathering celebrating Maxines life will be held in the Fellowship Hall at the church. Committal services will immediately follow at Grove Street Cemetery in Waterville. Funeral arrangements are by Gallant Funeral Home, 10 Elm St., Waterville, ME.
