Obituary for Mary Augusta Malloy Poulin

Mary Augusta Malloy Poulin
February 7, 1926 – January 19, 2019

Waterville-Mary Augusta Malloy Poulin, 92 of Waterville passed away on Saturday morning, January 19, 2019 from complications of pneumonia at MaineGeneral Medical Center, Augusta. She was born in Anson, Maine on February 7, 1926 .Her parents were Daniel T. and Winifred Ridlen Malloy.
She attended schools in Anson, Orono, and Augusta. She graduated from Orono High School in 1943 and from Gates Business College in Augusta where her family was residing at that time.
She worked for a time at Central Maine Power Company in Augusta before moving back to Orono to work in the Registrar’s Office at the University of Maine.
She met her future husband, Gerard Poulin of Winslow, at Kappa Sigma Fraternity in 1947. They were married on September 25, 1948 and spent their married life in Winslow. Mary was a housewife and loved taking care of her family. Her husband worked as an agent for Prudential Life Insurance Company, and they raised six children together. She and her husband enjoyed dancing, and it was a given that they would go out dancing every Saturday night. They found great enjoyment in the music of the 40’s, so conducive to great dancing. It enhanced their relationship and was a part of their married life.
Mary was active in Winslow, belonging to Fort Halifax Chapter DAR for sixty years. As a member of that organization, she served as Regent, and she also served as Chairman of the Good Citizen’s Committee for 40 years. Mary belonged to the VFW Auxillary 8835 of Winslow serving as President. She was active in Winslow school organizations while her children were in high school. She served as President of the Band Parents Organization, and she was active in the Football Boosters Club of which her husband was a charter member. They organized the annual fund drive for many years.
Mary loved to cook and was famous for her wonderful baked goods. There was always a supply of cakes, cookies, and pies for her family and after school snacks. She also loved to read, and there was a book handy, always. She served on the Winslow Library Board for a term.
After her husband retired, they began spending winters in their St. Petersburg, Florida condo. Summers were spent at their camp on China Lake. Jerry died on January 10, 1990. Mary continued to travel to Florida every winter for ten more years. In 1998, she booked a tour of Europe. It fulfilled a life-long dream of seeing the castles on the Rhine and visiting the Vatican. She made many visits to the Maine Coast staying at various Bed and Breakfasts. She and her good friend Esther Mae Smith took a trip to Las Vegas seeing the Hoover Dam and shows at the hotels, including one memorable show featuring Wayne Newton.
When keeping house became too much for her, she moved to assisted living where she made many new friends. Her dear family was of prime importance to her. She loved them dearly and was truly grateful; especially to her son-in-law, Gary, who showed her the utmost consideration. She loved him as her own son.
Mary was pre-deceased by her parents, her brother Daniel R. Malloy, and her husband Gerard Poulin. She is survived by James Poulin and his wife Diane of Winslow, Nancy Swain and her husband Joseph of Nantucket, Massachusetts, Pauline Mulkern and her husband Robert of Gorham, Patricia Gorman and her husband Gary of Oakland, Jolene Davidson and companion Richard Carter of Ashburn, Virginia, and John Poulin of Waterville. She is also survived by sixteen grandchildren, several great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
