Emily Lee Furman Obituary (1922 - 2012)

Emily Furman, 89, passed away unexpectedly on July 25, 2012 at her Winslow residence, which she called home for over 65 years. Emily was born on Oct. 29, 1922 in Sidney, Maine the daughter of George and Olga Kawalski Sawlivich. A sewing machine was the centerpiece of Emily's kitchen. Emily was a distinguished seamstress, beloved by many for her contribution to many an important occasion. Emily was always at the ready to create that exclusive garment to make that special day truly memorable. Emily was employed by C.F. Hathaway for many years. She began her career as a seamstress, but was quickly recognized for her immense talent. She soon found herself to be trainer, involved in research and development of new products, and was often called upon to create the first prototype of new designs as well as special orders for world dignitaries. After her retirement, Emily could most often be found outside in her garden, where she grew everything from apples to zinnias. She truly had a green thumb and loved to cook, can and make wine from her varied harvest; but mostly she loved to share the bounty of her garden with everyone she knew. Emily always put others ahead of herself. She thrived on making others happy; whether making a dress, sharing her vegetables or picking a bouquet of tulips for someone she loved. Emily truly enjoyed her cats. Sam, Scooter and Mikey were the latest to lavish in her attention, but many others were lucky to be called one of "Emily's cats". She is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth Furman of Oakland; her brothers, Joseph and Edward; as well as several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Joseph; and her son, Thomas. At Emily's request there will be no visiting hours. Burial will be at 1 p.m. Friday, July 27, at St. Francis Catholic Cemetery, 78 Grove St., Waterville. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Emily's memory to the Humane Society Waterville Area, 100 Webb Rd., Waterville, ME 04901 or to a charity of your choice.
